Sexual Abuse of Children

Home Topics Sexual Abuse of Children

How does this explainer help the user?

[Trigger Warning: The following content contains information on sexual and physical violence which some readers may find disturbing.]

This explainer seeks to lay down the legal provisions relating child sexual abuse. Indian law does not see children as being physically, mentally or emotionally capable of being involved in sexual activities and sees it as a form of abuse. Adults who sexually abuse children are punished severely by the law. Those who help someone sexually abuse a child (whether the child is a boy or girl) as well as those who know about the abuse but do not report it, also face punishment.

What are the laws being discussed?

The explainer discusses the legal provisions in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 which is a special law that addresses child sexual abuse.
